Position Summary:


The Orthopedic Technician transports patients, assists in the care and maintenance of equipment and supplies, cleans rooms, and assists the physician with all routine and advanced orthopedic and orthopedic surgical procedures.    


Major Position Responsibilities:

The position characteristics reflect the most important duties, responsibilities and competencies considered necessary to perform the essential functions of the job in a fully competent manner.   • Maintains a safe, clean working environment, including unit based safety and infection control requirements.
  • Assists the physician with all routine and advanced orthopedic procedures:
    • Remove casts, splints and orthopedic devices
    • Prepare the patient for procedures
    • Set up instruments and equipment for procedures
    • Apply and remove bandages and dressings that do not involve debridement
    • Provide written instructions to patients regarding proper cast care and use of crutches and devices
    • Remove sutures or staples from superficial incisions after sutures/staples have been assessed for removal by physician
    • Assist patients in ambulation and transfers
  • Assists the physician with orthopedic surgical procedures:
    • Assist with preparation and draping of the patient
    • Cut sutures
    • Tie sutures (above fascia, not on deep tissue)
    • Advance (but not insert) pins or screws in previously drilled holes
    • Apply and hold graspers on tissue during endoscopic surgery
    • Retract tissue
    • Tap and mallet on instruments held by a surgeon
    • Suction blood or other fluids from the operative field
    • Sponge the operative field
    • When provider is holding instruments, apply electrocautery through instruments to vessels, but not directly to vessels
    • Assist in cleaning and applying dressing
    • Assist in managing and maintaining the integrity of drains and devices attached to patient
  • Maintain all orthopedic equipment.
  • Maintain all orthopedic supplies and the supply room.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and practice of strict aseptic technique according to the Association of Operating Room Nurses (AORN).
  • Other duties as assigned.



  • Minimum two (2) years’ experience as an Orthopedic Technician in an acute care surgical setting, required.


  • Current BLS certification; American Heart Association Healthcare Provider, required.
  • Orthopaedic Technologist Certified (OTC) from the National Board for Certification of Orthopaedic Technologists, required.


Each new hire candidate who is offered employment must pass a physical evaluation, urine drug screen and pre-employment background checks before starting work.
