Position Summary:

The Emergency Department (ED) Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) is responsible for assisting the registered nurse, physician assistant or physician with procedures and patient care duties. The EMT functions under the direction of a Registered Nurse. EMT provides care for infant (0-1 year of age), pediatric (1-13 years of age) and adult (14 years of age and older) populations. In addition, the Lead EMT is responsible to assist with the orientation, education, and scheduling of EMTs in the ED.

 

Major Position Responsibilities:

  • Maintains a safe, clean working environment, including unit based safety and infection control requirements.
  • Assists leadership with work schedule and assignments.
  • Assists RNs, PAs or physicians with procedures, patient care and rounding. 
  • Provides or assists with splinting, casting, immobilizing of patient extremities. 
  • Assists with transporting patients as needed to and from the ED. 
  • Completes daily unit equipment checks and logs to meet regulatory requirements.
    • Rounds on the providers daily for equipment needs 
    • Communicates equipment updates to the staff on a routine basis
  • Orders supplies and equipment that has been approved by ED Leadership.
    • Maintains specialty cart supplies to include inventory list and expirations
    • Ensures specialty carts and supplies are immediately restocked and available after use
    • Coordinates with supply chain to provide specialty stock items for department
  • Acts as Area Safety Representative for the department.
    • Orients new EMTs to the department in coordination with the department educator and leadership
  • Rounds on patients each shift to improve the patient experience
    • Work collaboratively with leadership to develop and implement training for EMTs focused on standardized rounding practices. Ensuring patients receive consistent engagement throughout their ED stay, reducing the likelihood of leaving without treatment (LWOT), elopement or discharge against medical advice (AMA).

Qualifications:

  • Two (2) years’ experience working in an emergency department, required.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively in oral and written form in English, required.
  • Intermediate computer skills, required.
  • Must be able to meet the physical demands of the job (light to heavy lifting and/or pushing of patients or equipment), required.
  • One (1) year progressive leadership experience, preferred.

Education: 

  • High School Diploma or GED, required.

Certifications:

  • Current San Diego County EMT certificate or current Paramedic certificate, required.
  • Current BLS required upon hire; American Heart Association Healthcare Provider. 
  • NVCI within 90 days of hire or transfer, required.

 

Each new hire candidate who is offered employment must pass a physical evaluation, urine drug screen and pre-employment background checks before starting work. 

 

*Salary/Hourly wage range for this position is posted.  Actual pay will be determined based on verified experience as well as internal equity.
