Position Summary:  

The Clinical Data Analyst is a clinical professional with comprehensive clinical experience who assumes responsibility for the education, analysis and coordination for nurse sensitive indicators and quality initiatives.  This role will provide feedback on gaps in documentation and care and make recommendations for staff improvement.  The Clinical Data Analyst will develop education plans for clinical documentation improvement in conjunction with Managers and Educators and present this information in both group and individual sessions.  This position is responsible for accurate and timely reporting to NDNQI as well as knowing and communicating the required nursing documentation needed to meet JACHO, CMS, CDPH and other regulatory agency criteria.   


Major Position Responsibilities:

  • Retrieve information from hospital software in order to identify patients for both concurrent and retrospective chart review.
  • Provides feedback on gap analysis and develops plans for improvement. 
  • Maintains current and accurate lists of charts requested, pending, completed and entered into system. 
  • Develops criteria and processes for proper best practice chart documentation. 
  • Participates in the review, revision, and development of documentation polices and procedures.
  • Provides timely intervention and education to staff regarding gaps in documentation. 
  • Reviews and becomes thoroughly familiar with documentation in order to correctly interpret data according to the regulations
  • Maintains communications with appropriate agencies such as NDNQI in support of mandates. 
  • Reviews both paper and electronic medical records to accurately interpret and record required data.
  • Provides data analysis and reports as requested; identifies trends, patterns, quality variance issues and appropriately reports; participates in committees as assigned.
  • Communicates effectively with targeted staff and physicians to implement changes in documentation, clinical practice and behavior as indicated by results of concurrent review.
  • Develops collegial relationships with clinical staff to effectively influence changes in practice and behavior.


Safety and Infection Control Responsibilities

Responsible to maintain a safe and clean work environment, including unit based specific safety and infection control requirements



  • Minimum of 5 years clinical experience, required.
  • Knowledge of Cerner hospital software, preferred. 
  • Ability to abstract medical record information, required.
  • Knowledge in applying a scientific approach to analyzing patient outcomes and research and its application, required.
  • Knowledge of JCAHO standards and regulatory requirements, prospective payment systems, and capitation and managed care requirements related to targeted population, required. 
  • Strong computer and organizational skills.  Ability to manage databases and retrieve, analyze summarize and present information effectively, required.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, required. 
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with clinical staff to influence behavior change, required. 



  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing or other clinical degree, required. 
  • Bachelors degree, preferred. 



  • Current California RN license or other professional clinical license, required.
