Overview

Position Summary:

Assists the Pathology Assistant or Pathologist in the gross processing of tissue specimens.  Performs accessioning labeling and computer entry of demographic and specimen information.  Performs order entry, processing specimens for send out to referral lab.  Performs frozen sections, slide staining, instrument maintenance and morgue maintenance.  Prepares reagents and handles hazardous chemical and carcinogens.

 

The skills set required for this position involves extensive training to develop the knowledge and skill level necessary for independent, safe work performance.  The extended training involves developing expertise in frozen sections, reagent preparation, safe handling of hazardous chemicals and carcinogens and gross assisting.

May not perform any duties or tasks that require a California Clinical Laboratory Scientist License. 

 

Major Position Responsibilities  

  • Specimen Processing including transport from Histology.
  • Assist with grossing.
  • Accessioning
  • Patient registration
  • Gross station set up per pathologist
  • Send-out processing.
  • Staining of slides.
  • Preparing frozen sections
  • Morgue maintenance
  • Assist with autopsy
  • Preparation of reagents
  • Instrument maintenance
  • Workstation clean up
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Safety and Infection Control Responsibilities

Responsible to maintain a safe and clean work environment, including unit based specific safety and infection control requirements.

 

Qualifications

  • Two years of relevant work experience in a laboratory required
  • Knowledge of medical terminology required

Education:  

  • High School Diploma or GED required.    
  • Associates degree (2 years college) in life science courses or equivalent preferred
