In order to achieve our mission, we see, hear and listen to our front line healthcare workers, employees, medical staff and all community stakeholders in order to understand and meet our community’s needs.   Position Summary: The Orthopedic Technologist is a trained member of the orthopedic team who works with all healthcare professionals in delivering high quality patient care.  The Orthopedic Technologist is familiar with routine office and departmental procedures and is able to perform basic nursing functions The Orthopedic Technologist is an expert in plaster and synthetic cast/splint application and removal. They demonstrate knowledge of specific orthopedic procedures and display dexterity in the use of instrumentation and equipment.  The Orthopedic Technologist is able to fit and adjust crutches/canes/walkers as well as instruct the patients on the use of these aids. The Orthopedic Technologist also possesses expert ability in application of braces, orthotics and can perform minor adjustments or repairs on them.   Major Position Responsibilities: The position characteristics reflect the most important duties, responsibilities and competencies considered necessary to perform the essential functions of the job in a fully competent manner. The characteristics of the position and standards of performance may be changed by TCMC with or without prior notice based on the needs of the organization. - Maintains a safe, clean working environment, including unit based safety and infection control requirements. - Assists physicians to carry out their orders, including but not limited to, performing bandage/dressing changes, removal of sutures or staples and apply or remove casts or splints. - Apply all DME as ordered by physician. - Adequately educate patients on the care and use of all casts/splints/DME as well as proper ambulation using assistive devices such as crutches/canes/walkers. - Maintain a clean and well stocked cast room. - Manage patient flow in a timely fashion in accordance to the schedule. - Answer all phone calls and check voicemail throughout the day. - Bill for all casts/splints/DME as outlined by the DME Billing Policy and Procedure. - Check in all orders received as per the guidelines in the DME and Supply Ordering Policy and Procedure. - Informs physician of any patient complications requiring additional support. - Attends staff meetings and participates in a positive manner. - Participates in appropriate in-services and continued education. - Performs all other duties as assigned. Qualifications: - One (1) year experience in either a hospital, clinical or office setting; working directly in the treatment of orthopedic patients, preferred. - Ability to articulate descriptions of orthopedic conditions based upon a basic understanding of anatomical structures and their relationship with one another. - Ability to apply/remove all casts/splints. - Ability to fit all durable medical equipment (DME). - Understanding of proper aseptic techniques when applying bandages/dressings. - Ability to educate patients regarding the care and use of all orthopedic devices such as casts/splints/DME. Reconciling account balances, corrects any errors, including misapplied payments, late charges, interest payments or over payments from the insurance carriers. - Reviews accounts for contractual adjustments based on contract loaded in Alliance/AVEGA.  Immediately reports discrepancies to management and may assist with “special projects” as assigned. - Refers any account requiring further action to the appropriate follow up representative or agency.   - Use judgment in escalating unresolved issues to management. Coordinate and clearly communicate issues to responsible parties. - Continue to stay informed of any changes in regulations, statutes, or contract changes that could impact collection of receivables. - Complete daily and weekly volume/productivity management reporting. - Researches, identifies, and rectifies any special circumstances affecting delayed payment of accounts, when appropriate. - Takes personal initiative to bring forward process/performance improvements as identified. Performs special assigned duties to meet the needs of the department. - Workstations, desk and surrounding area to be kept neat, clean and safe for other employee’s to work at any time.   Qualifications: - Requires at least three years of medical insurance billing and collections in patient accounting business office or hospital setting. Experience with the collection and billing of HMO, PPO, Workers Compensation, Indemnity, Medicare and Medi-Cal and other types of insurance for claims reimbursement. - Expected production calls up to 40 accounts per day.  Medical Terminology, ICD-9, CPT and HCPC coding essential is necessary. Interpretation of health plan contracts as it relates to reimbursement is a must and how to calculate rates from coding to contract. Experience with collector work list and the responsibility of keeping a daily or weekly tab on patient accounts. - Persuasive negotiator to be used when calling health plans for payment. Must have strong interpersonal, verbal and written English language skills sufficient to interact effectively with both internal and external contacts. - Triaging of accounts before following up with the insurance carrier to determine what is necessary to get the claim paid. Must be able to work with other professionals and license personnel to resolve issues and make certain decision with the scope of the position. - Must have experience in a Windows environment, able to create a spreadsheet, letters and documents using Microsoft Office to include Microsoft Word and Excel. - Must know how to use the Internet as it relates to the follow up of insurance payments on the health plans websites.  Must know how to use Microsoft Outlook for internal and/or must have the ability to read, understand and interpret correspondence from a health insurance plan.  - Requires typing skills of 45WPM. Excellent human relations’ skills including listening, conflict resolution, coaching, and team building. - Must have ability to demonstrate flexibility in response to unexpected change in work volume and hospital staffing needs. Process oriented skills with ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously by prioritizing responsibilities and meeting deadlines required. Ability to ensure the confidentiality and rights of patients and the confidentiality of hospital and departmental documents required.  Education: - High school diploma or GED, required. Responsible for providing assistance to the Patient Accounting Department (PA) and staff with regard to incoming calls, inquires, correspondence, making patient collection calls, bad debt assignment of community service, charity care, return mail and other clerical duties. CSR is responsible for all follow up on Health Cash arrangements monthly to ensure patient is current on the invoice. - Perform research and correspondence functions to assist with responses to customer and insurance company inquiries. Recognize and relate problem service issues to Management.  Perform related claims approving and clerical work as assigned. - Responsible for documenting bad address information, when return mail is received, in the Patient Accounting System notes.   If new address information is received, the accounts will be updated and letters will be resent to the new address. - Responsible for requesting files/EOB’s from storage and coordinating the return of batches back to storage.  This will include COA’s, inpatient jackets, cash sheets, etc.  Responsible for labeling all boxes, which contain the completed insurance verification jackets. - Responsible for working with outsourcing agencies to obtain requested information. Qualifications: - Requires at least one-year experience in a healthcare environment and a thorough understanding of medical terminology. - Able to perform basic mathematical calculations, balance and reconcile numbers. - Ability to speak fluently in a foreign language is a plus.  Must have the ability to read, understand and interpret correspondence from a health insurance plan.  - Must be able to work under pressure, handle stressful situations effectively and deal politely with subscribers and providers, both on telephone and in lobby interviews. - Ability to speak well on the telephone and maintain a positive telephone personality. - Must be able to compose clear concise letters, designated, sort and screen correspondence receipts and resolve via coding of additional payment. - Ability to adapt to change and effectively perform duties in a multitask environment. - Requires typing skills of 35WPM, requires data entry experience, Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook knowledge. - Excellent human relations’ skills including listening, conflict resolution, coaching, and team building. - Must have ability to demonstrate flexibility in response to unexpected change in work volume and hospital staffing needs. - Process oriented skills with ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously by prioritizing responsibilities and meeting deadlines required. - Ability to ensure the confidentiality and rights of patients and the confidentiality of hospital and departmental documents required. Qualifications: - Six (6) months hospital pharmacy experience, preferred. - Pyxis med station and CII Safe experience, preferred. - Computer skills, preferred. - IV sterile technique competency, preferred. - Brand/generic name knowledge, required. - IV admixture experience, required (OP Infusion Center only) - Chemotherapy preparation experience, preferred. Education:  - High School Diploma or GED, required.
